Denver Zoo

The hunt for the new family activity continued throughout the weekend due to the unpredictable weather, until my wife decided that we would take a chance and just plan a day at the zoo. What better activity if you have children under the age of ten. Besides all children are wild beasts anyway just looking to run in the open space. So we gathered up the family: Randy, Sheila, Mom, Dad, the wife, and the two rascals and headed down to the Denver Zoo.

Boxing Kangaroo versus the Ostrich

Even upon arrival all I could think of is how much time had passed since I last went to visit the zoo. In fact, I could not even remember what age I was, but I know it was most likely during my teenage years. However, the sites and smell of the Denver Zoo quickly brought back memories. This time I was looking forward to being the adult and to show my niece, Lea, and my nephew Jordan around. Perhaps this feeling of anticipation came from knowing my wife was expecting our first child any time now and I was wanting to practice the art of parenting.

We quickly made our way past the finely made steel statues of the giraffe and lion at the entrance of the zoo. Only then realizing that the rains that never ceased to stop for days prior to that day went away and now we were under the blazing Colorado sun looking for any vendor who could sell us some sun screen.

Once your in the vendor’s got you charging an arm and a leg for a tiny bottle of sun screen we quickly lathered it on and rush to the first exhibit. We found ourselves stairing at some hyenas. It was a good day for them as they were able to laugh at all these humans melting in the sun for which they were already so accustomed to coming from Africa.

Lion - King of the Jungle

The zoo was filled with so much attraction then I remembered before. There was a wide variety of animals from the rhino, gorialla, kangaroo, wild cats, snakes, and even a nice mixture of birds. To my surprise they even had penguins and seals the acquatic life that you qould least expect in a place like that. For the most part most of the animals were out and about and active so that the kids eyes would open wide and a smile on their face lit up all of us in the family.

After a good four hours it was time to leave this little paradise in the midst of the city and head back home. The kids quickly fell asleep on the ride home.

Thank God for even creatures who entertain us and who keep kids dreaming.

La Sandia

I was looking to take my wife to a nice romantic dinner for Valentines. Having search for various Restaurants on the web I stumbled on a place called La Sandia. From the photos it was easy to tell that the ambiance was perfect for a romantic dinner so I made reservations. To my surprise not only did the restaurant provide a nice atmosphere but the service and food were excellent!

That day the car broke down and my friend Jeff help out putting it back together so I naturally invited he and his wife to join us. Good times baby, good times!

Here is more about the restaurant.:  Richard Sandoval will introduce his new restaurant with the opening of La Sandia Mexican Kitchen and Tequila Bar (8340 East 49th Avenue, Northfield Stapleton, 303-373-9100), in Denver, CO. Located Northfield Stapleton, La Sandia will introduce traditional Mexican cuisine in a modern and casual setting with a moderately priced menu to a broader audience.

Salsa

After watching so many Dancing with the Stars episode, if you are like us you will want to go and do a little Salsa yourself. Here are some the the clubs in Denver the offer Salas Night.

There is sometimes a live band on Sun. This club has a large dance floor and nice atmosphere. If you're a beginner, you won't feel intimidated here. This is also a common hangout for local casino dancers and there are often ruedas going on.

La Rumba

303-293-8035
50% salsa on Thursdays and Saturdays
Saturdays: live band, usually salsa; mostly merengue during breaks.
Dress code, large dance floor, extremely crowded.

Teddy’s
4849 Bannock St
Denver, CO 80216
(303) 292-9500
If you’re adventurous, try heading over to Teddy’s. Although there are latinos at all the clubs in different amounts (10%-75% I’d say), in Teddy’s you might not see a non-Latino face in the whole crowd. The place is packed and has a totally different energy than anywhere else in Denver.
