Hiking Trails
Golden Gate

The Burro trail, is one of several good day hikes in Golden Gate Canyon State Park west of Golden, is a roughly 5-mile loop through varied terrain with a short spur to a viewpoint at the top of Windy Peak. It’s rated as difficult, but hikers-only sections make it enticing. An easier option is the Horseshoe trail, also a hikers-only route, a 3.6-mile-out-and-back up a draw and through strands of aspen into Frazer Meadow, with its historic ranch buildings and backcountry campsites.

This much-visited park on Bear Creek about 4 miles west of Morrison offers two kid-friendly loops of about a mile each, one going down to the bridge east of the parking lot and the other circling up onto a bluff south of the creek. Longer options are available, including a 6.5 mile trail through Denver Moutain Parks property to the southwest ending at the Pence Park on the Myers Gulch Road south of Kittreidge.

  • Location: Take Morrison road west till you pass Idledale about 1 mile.

This Labor day we went with our friends Valerie, Dale, and their dog Aspen to Blue Lake past the city of Ward. It is often described as the most popular area for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in all of the Front Range, the Brainard Lake area has a great variety of trails for both cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Brainard Lake Trail, Waldrop North Ski Trail, CMC South Ski Trail, and Little Raven Ski Trail all leave from the Red Rock Lake trailhead and lead to Brainard Lake.

Round the lake we go!
