Driving on State Road 150 on the way home from the Great Sand Dunes National Monument in Southern Colorado, I was quickly reminded about a conversation I had with a friend where he mentioned there is a water fall close by the monument. I tried to recall the name, and suddenly a sign appeared saying, “Zapata Falls.” .We turned into the gravel road which seem to lead us to the heart of the an Juan Mountain Range, but it suddenly ended ¼ mile away from the falls. I reached for my water bottle and camera. We began to climb up the marked trail to the falls.

It was definitely an Oasis after having played in the Sand Dunes for about four hours and being beat down by the sun. The trail was rocky and there was a short stint by which you could not avoid having to walk in the water in order to reach the falls.

Here is more about the falls: Zapata Falls is located south of Great Sand Dunes National Monument. The falls themselves are an impressive geologic feature, where snowmelt from the peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Range has carved a dramatic narrow gorge. The area offers breathtaking vistas of the San Luis Valley and the Great Sand Dunes.

The falls area is one of a few known Colorado breeding sites for the rare and elusive black swift, a bird that nests exclusively in the dark recesses and spray of large waterfalls. The area also contains good to excellent quality grassland, woodland, shrubland, and forest communities
